Work Record 1

Work Record 1

Research

Marina Abramovic

I decided to do something similar only I will have images with the the skeleton alone as well as with people. I will put different the skeleton in different costumes to make it even more different. I also have a skull I can use.

Plans for shoot

For this shoot I will use a skeleton as a prop both on it's own, with other items or with people. This will be done in the studio so I can have a plain background.

Image bank

My images will be odd like the ones above just my skeleton will be life size.

My Best images

I like how the first image of the skeleton with the mask has a feather out of place as it shows how you don't have to be perfect to look smart. The lighting is and framing are also prefect. The fact that the skeleton is wearing a masquerade mask glamorises death.

The second image is interesting as it can be seen as funny, as its laughing, or as scary because its wearing black like the grim ripper. I say it is both as I think it's more like the grim ripper on his day off, explaining why he has no hod. Thinking about the grim ripper having a day off is funny but it being the grim ripper is scary.

The following are more like the Marina Abramovic as they feature both a person and a skeleton. The first is has the skeleton as a friend. The bottom isn't the best as you can see the end of the screen a bit but this can be cut out on photoshop.

My next one looks like a scene from a Shakespeare play as it is so dramatic. Although it is funny as it's over the top. It shows a close relationship between the two. The bottom can also be cut out. I think its a good example of Marina Abramovic work as it is very odd but not quite uncomfortable like her over work.

In this image the skeleton is part of the group as if to say that they are friends with death. This image and the over images all normalise death.

The image above is the most like Abramovic's work as it shows a person holding the skeleton as if in love with it and not knowing it's a skeleton.

This image has a person with a skeleton on their head. It works as it's odd like Marina Abramovic's work.

Images that require improvement

The top image of the skeleton on the chair is not close enough so you can't make out the detail of the skeleton. The main problem with this image is that the background isn't completely clear as you can see the rest of the room in the right corner and at the bottom.

The second involving the upper half of the skeleton with the face mask doesn't have the problem of a unclear background but isn't positioned correctly meaning its not central, this makes the image less clean.

The last has 2 problems, the first being the unclear background due to the top bar being visible although this could be cut out using photoshop. The second bigger issue is the fact that the full skeleton isn't in the shoot this could of been avoided by framing the image correctly before taking the image, but this was taken when we were thinking of more ideas, so it was taken in the moment which explains why it is how it is. It may have not worked in this case but many of the best images were taken this way.

AO3: Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions, reflecting critically on work and progress.

I decided to use a white background instead of black like Marina Abramovic to make it more fun. Although I should of tried it with the black as an experiment to see how much of a difference to the feel of the shoot it would of made.

AO2Explore and select appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes, reviewing and refining ideas as work develops.

I didn't use any lighting to make the images feel natural, I believe this approach was effective.  All the images that include people and below have the settings of F-stop:8, shutter speed:1/125 and ISO:100. The images above the ones with people have a slightly lower F-stop as I was closer to the subject.

AO1: Develop ideas through sustained and focused investigations informed by contextual and other sources, demonstrating analytical and critical understanding.

My original plan was to just have images of the skeleton with a single person. However after looking through my stuff I found a hat that I thought would look funny on the skeleton. I then decided to put some clothes on the skeleton. I also realised that the skeleton looks fine on his own as well.

I'll make the images darker by changing the exposure. As although the images are going to be more fun then the Abramovic's work I do still want them to be dark. Some have also been cropped to remove the gap at the bottom. I have decided that the images of the skeleton allow will not be edited as I don't think they need editing as they are both creepy yet funny.

AO4: Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and, where appropriate, makes connections between visual and other elements.

Progression: you must refer to what you will do next to improve on either the shoot you have done or how you will develop your project in the next shoot.

For my next shoot I will use two glass skulls one big one small I will put colourful see through sweet rappers in them and experiment with the light using both a torch or tea lights.
